"I am not rising
(against Yazid) as an insolent or an
arrogant person, or a mischief-monger or
tyrant. I have risen (against Yazid) as I
seek to reform the Ummah (community) of my
grandfather. I wish to bid the good and
forbid the evil."
~ Imam Husayn (a) ~
"I have abandoned
the creation in Your love. I have orphaned
my children so that I may see You. If the
swords were to cut me into pieces in Your
love, even then my heart would not long for
other than You."
~ Imam Husayn (a) ~
"O Allah, what did
he find who lost You, and what did he lose
who found You?"
~ Imam Husayn (a) ~
"Husayn is from me
and I am from Husayn"

About the Event:
"I have learnt from Husayn how to be oppressed yet
victorious" - Mahatma Gandhi
In light of the wars, genocides and oppression that
afflict humanity today, Husayn's message has taught us
against passivity... How will you take action? Don't
distance yourself!
Come to the symposium on Friday 27th February 2009 at
3:30PM to listen to two outstanding speakers share their
views on how Husayn fought oppression and injustice!
Ashura commemorates a struggle that is steeped in deep
spiritual meaning, not only for Islamic history but for
all humanity. It is a struggle between good and evil,
between just and unjust, between weak and powerful,
between immediate and the eternal, between principle and
ambition. The power of Ashura is not only in the epic
events that it commemorates, it is in the narrative of
those events, in the symbolisms that we construct.
Ultimately, it is in the meanings that we derive from
those events. |

Ashura Awareness Resources
Only now and
again rises above the common level a rare spirit like
that of Husayn son of Ali. The light emitting out of
such a paragon of humanity shines like a strong beacon
upon a dark and disordered
world. It seems that the artistic hands of the Creator
has composed the scene of Karbala with utmost precision
and such unparalleled tragedy, so as to provide humanity
with the archetypes of good and evil; martyr and tyrant;
oppressed and the oppressor. The tragedy of Karbala in
680 CE provides humanity a better understanding, in
absolute terms, of the concepts of human values, human
dignity and human freedom. |

8. Sultans of Science Exhibit / Journey to Mecca IMAX Film @ Ontario Science
Centre
When: Feb - May, 2009
Where: Ontario
Science Centre 770 Don
Mills Road (at the corner of Eglinton Avenue East), Toronto, ON

OSC IMAX Times:

About Sultans of Science Exhibit:
Sultans of Science: 1000 Years of Knowledge Rediscovered
Did you know
that the first piloted flying device soared well before Leonardo da Vinci took
flight in the 15th century? In the ninth century on a hill near Cordoba, Spain,
a scholar and inventor named Abbas Bin Firnas harnessed himself to a feathered
glider and briefly took flight, amazing his spectators.
The glider is just one of the inventions recreated for Sultans of Science: 1000
Years of Knowledge Rediscovered, an international touring exhibition making its
Canadian premiere at the Ontario Science Centre.
The exhibition celebrates the scientific and technological breakthroughs made by
scholars during the Golden Age of the Islamic World (eighth to 18th centuries)
and their lasting influence on modern science and technology.
About Journey to Mecca IMAX:
Journey to Mecca tells the story of a young scholar, who leaves Tangier in 1325
on an epic and perilous journey, travelling alone from his home in Morocco to
reach Mecca, some 3,000 miles to the east.
lbn Battuta is besieged by countless obstacles as he makes his way across the
North African desert to Mecca. Along the route he meets an unlikely stranger, a
highwayman, who becomes his paid protector and eventual friend.
During his travels he is attacked by bandits, dehydrated by thirst, rescued by
Bedouins and forced to retrace his route by a war-locked Red Sea. lbn Battuta
finally joins the legendary Damascus Caravan with thousands of pilgrims bound
for Mecca for the final leg of what would become his 5,000 mile, 18 month long
journey to Mecca.
When he arrives in Mecca, he is a man transformed. We then experience the Hajj
as he did over 700 years ago and, in recognition of its timelessness, we
dissolve to the Hajj as it is still performed today by millions of pilgrims in
some of the most extraordinary and moving IMAX® footage ever presented.
lbn Battuta would not return home for almost 30 years, reaching over 40
countries and revisiting Mecca five more times to perform the Hajj. He would
travel three times farther than Marco Polo.
His legacy is one of the greatest travel journals ever recorded. A crater on the
moon is named in his honour.
An SK Films Release in association with National Geographic of a Cosmic Picture
Film.
