Pearls of Wisdom

"Indeed Allah only desires to keep away all impurity from you, O people of the Household and to purify you a thorough purification."

[Qur'an, al-Ahzab, 33:33]

“And they feed, for the love of Allah, the needy, the orphan, and the captive (Saying), "We feed you for the sake of Allah alone; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks.”

[Qur'an, al-Insan, 76:8-9]

“Fatima is the mother of her father.”

 ~Prophet Muhammad (s)~

“Fatima is part of me and I am part of her; whoever harms her harms me and whoever harms me angers Allah.”

 ~Prophet Muhammad (s)~

“Whoever angers her angers me and whoever satisfies her satisfies me.”

 ~Prophet Muhammad (s)~

“Allah becomes angry for her anger and satisfied for her satisfaction.”

 ~Prophet Muhammad (s)~

“I have not seen anyone more similar to the Messenger of Allah in his speech, looks, guidance, sitting and standing than Fatima. When he used to see her coming he would stand up, kiss her hand, and seat her in his place.”

~ A'isha ~

“I have not seen anyone who is more truthful than her except her father.”

~ A'isha ~

“Oh Allah! belittle me in my eyes and glorify and magnify Your station to me. And inspire in me Your obedience and the practice which may cause Your pleasure and the shunning and evading from things which are the cause of Your wrath, oh the most merciful of all!”

~ Sayyida Fatima (a) ~

“A believer is not truly a believer, if his neighbours do not feel assured that he will do no harm to them. He who believes in God and the Day of Judgment does not hurt his neighbours.”

~ Sayyida Fatima (a) ~

“On the eves of Friday I saw my mother standing in her prayer niche. She was continuously kneeling and prostrating till the dawn broke. I would hear her pray for the men and women, but she did not at all pray for herself. I said, 'Oh mother why did you not pray for yourself like you prayed for others?' So she replied, ‘Oh my son, first thy neighbour and there after your own house’".

~ Imam Hasan (a) ~

3. Muhammad Lila Anchors CBC News at Six

It is with great pride that we announce the achievement of one of our community members and a friend to many in TMA, who was one of its earliest members and supporters. Reporter Muhammad Lila is anchoring CBC News at Six (Toronto) this week.

Please contact CBC with your feedback, and let them know  that with over 350,000 Muslims in Toronto, CBC is the only news network with a Muslim anchor. Encourage the diversity on their team and suggest that you will watch their news more regularly if Muhammad Lila anchors. It is preferable that you call CBC News directly at (416) 205-6304. To email or fax them, go here.

Muhammad Lila isn't your run-of-the-mill storyteller. With a background that spans three continents, he's a reporter, anchor, shooter, and editor – all rolled into one. He's covered radicalism in the U.S. prison system, been involved in a high speed car chase, and was once detained at gunpoint. He’s even hitch-hiked out of Iraq. And each time, he managed to get the story.

"There’s no point being a journalist if you’re afraid to take risks" he says. "That means doing things, or going places, that other reporters are afraid to."

For the past several years, Muhammad has been covering and uncovering stories that make a difference in Toronto. From school shootings to massive fires to undercover investigative reports, he believes strongly in standing up for the disadvantaged. Muhammad is a graduate of Columbia University's School of Journalism. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, travelling, reading, and is training for the Scrabble World Championships.

4. In the News: Faith and the Environment

Can faith or religion tackle the crisis of the environment? This was the topic of discussion at a symposium on May 17 entitled Faith and the Environment, organized by Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS) with the support of the Thaqalayn Muslim Association (TMA). This once-in-a-blue moon event was made even more special as this was the first time that the RIS sought support from the TMA, a Shia organization – a revolutionary step in fostering unity amongst the Muslim youth organizers...

6. Obama and American Muslim Voters

"As Obamamania continues to capture the imagination of the United States, parts of the American Muslim community are no less overcome by the Illinois senator's charismatic and overpowering vision for change. It makes sense. He is a man of diverse ethnic background who seeks dialogue over war, who can credibly represent change given his independence from establishment politics and whose life story suggests an intimate understanding of the Muslim world. In many ways he represents more than Muslims could have hoped for given the radioactive nature of Islam in America over the past several years. Someone who seemingly has a sympathetic ear and background that could build bridges.

But for many reasons, Muslims are one constituency Obama does not want to court..."
