3. Six Tips for Tackling 'Islamo-Fascism' Events at
Universities
The Muslim Public Affairs Council today
released a guide for Muslim student and
community groups in response to an
upcoming series of highly controversial
and provocative events on college
campuses organized by extreme right wing
activist David Horowitz.
Under the banner of "Islamo-Fascism
Awareness Week" (IFAW), Horowitz's
Freedom Center is organizing speaking
engagements at colleges and universities
for the likes of Ann Coulter, Daniel
Pipes, Dennis Prager, Sean Hannity,
Robert Spencer, Rick Santorium and Wafa
Sultan. Organizers are billing the event
as the "biggest conservative campus
protest ever." To date, IFAW events have
been canceled at a handful of
universities, where administrators and
student groups called the event divisive
and hateful.
MPAC's guide, entitled "What You Need to
Know About Islamo-Fascism Awareness
Week", includes information about the
forces behind IFAW as well as a set of
recommendations for Muslim student
groups encouraging self-restraint in the
face of outside agitators.
The
guide includes information about the
need for student groups to:
-
demonstrate Islamic ethics and
restraint
-
support free speech
-
not respond
-
contact campus administrators
-
talk to other student groups
-
report hate crimes and hate
incidents
MPAC has consulted with Muslim student
leaders across the country to provide
tools for dialogue and constructive
engagement with campus administrators
and other student groups and to prevent
negative fallout from IFAW events.
MPAC is also conducting
"Truth Over Fear:
Countering Islamophobia"
workshops for student
groups, to provide them
with tools to serve as
an effective and
constructive voice in
their campus community,
and to respond to
incidents of hate and
intolerance. To find out
more about these
high-energy, interactive
workshops and to
schedule one in your
area, visit
www.mpac.org/tof or

Islamic Science Rediscovered
The Liberty Science Center of New Jersey hosts a
traveling exhibition featuring Muslim inventions and
discoveries.
Quick, who designed the first flying apparatus? If you
answered that it was the Wright brothers in the late
19th century, or even Leonardo DaVinci in the 1400s,
you're a little off. The earliest known person to build
and pilot a flying device was Abbas Bin Firnas in
ninth-century Islamic Spain. So why have most of us
never heard of him? Because the West has forgotten many
of the great accomplishments by men and women of science
who called the Islamic world home.

Islamic History Month Canada
Canada's national cultural heritage is the sum total of
the way Canadians from every background and every walk
of life identify and express themselves. Islamic
civilization does not belong only to Muslim Canadians,
but to all Canadians. In fact, for more than 1,000 years
(about 600 AD through 1600 AD), Muslims made significant
contributions to the well-being of humanity in numerous
fields of endeavour. There are so many good stories to
share and new learnings to experience; we intend to do
all that, and more, during Islamic History Month Canada.
- Senator Mobina Jaffer, Honourary Chair, Canadian
Islamic History Month Canada
The objective of IHMC is to motivate and
inspire Canadian Muslims to annually
share their history, heritage and
culture with fellow Canadians during one
month, to be called the Islamic History
Month Canada (IHMC).
This goal would be achieved through
community and public events such as;
exhibitions, lectures, celebrity tours,
book fairs, and other complementary
activities.
This will be a month in which Canadian
Muslims celebrate and share our diverse
civilization, including our
contributions to the arts, sciences,
medicine, architecture, humanities,
music, spirituality, and every area of
human knowledge.
